Sookdeo Bissoondoyal

Sookdeo Bissoondoyal remains one of the important figures in the modern history of Mauritius. Teacher, patriot, parliamentarian, public servant and man of conviction, he belonged to a generation that helped shape the moral, civic and political foundations of the country.

His life was marked by simplicity, discipline, courage and service. Before entering public life, he was an educator — a role that already reflected his belief in knowledge, dignity and the uplifting power of education. Later, through his political engagement and public responsibilities, he contributed to the national journey towards independence, social advancement and democratic participation.

Sookdeo Bissoondoyal’s legacy is not only political. It is also ethical. He is remembered as a man of principle, attached to honesty, public duty and the dignity of ordinary citizens. His name carries the memory of a period when leadership was closely linked to personal sacrifice, humility and commitment to the wider community.

For the students and alumni of Sookdeo Bissoondoyal State Secondary School, later known as Sookdeo Bissoondoyal State College, his name is more than the name of an institution. It is a reminder that education should produce not only academic success, but also character, responsibility and service.

SookdeoBs pays tribute to this legacy. It aims to connect generations of students, alumni, staff and supporters around the values that his name represents: learning, integrity, courage, solidarity and contribution to society.

This homage is therefore not only a look back at history. It is also a call to carry forward a living legacy — by mentoring the young, supporting the school community, celebrating achievement, preserving memory and helping future generations grow with confidence, discipline and purpose.

A Short History of SBSSS / SBSC

Sookdeo Bissoondoyal State Secondary School, later known as Sookdeo Bissoondoyal State College, forms part of the educational and social memory of Rose Belle and the wider southern region of Mauritius.

The school is named after Sookdeo Bissoondoyal, a Mauritian teacher, public figure and contributor to the country’s independence movement. His name gave the institution a strong civic and moral identity, associating education with discipline, service, dignity and national consciousness.

The college traces its origins to 1974, when it began with a modest student population and was initially associated with an old railway station building. It later moved to its present site at Chapelle Lane / Chapel Road, Rose Belle, where it gradually developed into a recognised state secondary institution.

For many former students of the 1980s and 1990s, the school was remembered as a boys’ college, with a strong identity around the name “Sookdeo Boyz”. This expression became part of the informal culture and nostalgia of several generations of students. Over time, the school’s identity evolved, and the wider Sookdeo Bissoondoyal community now includes alumni, current students, staff, former staff, parents, professionals and supporters.

SookdeoBs has been created to honour this journey. It does not replace any existing association, alumni group or official structure. It is a neutral digital platform intended to bring together the wider Sookdeo Bissoondoyal family around memory, mentorship, enterprise, guidance, events, scholarships and support for the college.

The history of SBSSS / SBSC is not only the story of buildings, dates and names. It is also the story of teachers who guided generations, students who grew into professionals, friendships that lasted a lifetime, and values that continue to shape lives beyond the classroom.

SookdeoBs preserves, enriches and transmits history — from one generation to the next.
